Caversham Wildlife Park

On Friday 10th September we took the Italian students to Caversham Wildlife Park. Their host brothers and sisters accompanied them so we had approximately 40 people in our group. Some hosts had never been to this famous tourist destination before so it was an excellent adventure for them too. Debbie was our guide and she was very good at providing information about all the different exhibits and the amazing animals that live in the park. For example, did you know that wombats can travel at up to 40km per hour ? Amazing isn't it ? Especially for an animal that looks quite "plump" (they can grow to 35kgs). You can only touch the koalas with the back of your hand and you shouldn't touch the leaves otherwise the koalas won't eat them. The Farm Show was a wonderful way to highlight some excellent elements of Australiana such as sheep shearing, whip cracking and billy tea swinging. Erik swung the billy successfully, Antonella and Martino tried to crack the whip and create a sonic boom but didn't quite make it. After a magnificent morning in the wilds at Whiteman we travelled to the marvellous Mondo Nougat factory for some tasty treats. It was a great day and we hope everyone continues to enjoy the exchange experience !

Il Primo Giorno A Mount Lawley

Che giorno favoloso ! La mattina presto eravamo nella mensa di Michelle Masarei (la madre di Myles). Poco dopo sono arrivati gli studenti d'italiano dell'anno 8 GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) che hanno fatto da cicerone per i Tiranesi. Dopo un giro della scuola scoprendo le aule di multimedia, fotografia, palestra, ecc siamo andati nell'aula N4.1 in Middle School North per una lezione con gli studenti dell'anno undici. Ognuno doveva conoscere sei persone nuove con delle domande in inglese e italiano e poi i Tiranesi hanno completato i loro poster intitolati "Eccomi". Questi poster sono stati messi in biblioteca cosi tutti gli studenti a Mount Lawley Senior High School possono conoscere chi sono i Tiranesi e sapere come si chiamano, con chi vivono durante il soggiorno a Perth ed altre informazioni utili. Dopo pranzo alcuni studenti hanno lavorato con gli studenti GATE, aiutandoli con il loro italiano. Timoteo, Emanuela, Chiara ed Erik sono stati bravissimi ! Grazie ragazzi ! E` stata una bellissima esperienza per i nostri studenti, sicuramente una che non dimenticheranno mai. Poi i quattro "maestrini" hanno avuto l'opportunita` di provare a giocare Aussie Rules Football. Erik e` stato bravissimo, he took a great mark ed e` stato applaudito dagli studenti di Middle School. Dopo pranzo ho avuto Laura in classe con gli studenti dell'anno 10 ed e` stata bravissima ad aiutare gli studenti con il loro italiano, grazie Laura ! What a hectic but fantastic first day. Well done to all the Tiranesi, you were wonderful ambassadors for your country today and gave our MLSHS community a great taste of Italian language and culture.

Family Hostings

One of the most wonderful things about being part of the Mount Lawley school community is the care and consideration that families involved in programs like the Lawley Italia Cultural Exchange Program show not only to the young people they are hosting but also to the whole group involved in this special program, students and parents combined. I am proud of the way everyone has worked together to find solutions to the challenges (big and small) that we have encountered along the way. I would like to salute Bianca Petale and the incredible effort she has put into the planning and coordinating of such a complex program. Her expertise in this area is a wonderful asset and ensures that things run smoothly. May we all have a positive experience that hopefully enriches our lives and reminds us of the value a program like this provides all involved. Arrivano I Tiranesi !!!

Mercoledi otto settembre. Oggi sono arrivati gli studenti di Tirano da Brisbane. Signor Camilleri (il vice preside) ed io eravamo li ad aspettarli e sono arrivati con mezz'ora di ritardo dopo sei ore di volo. Si, l'Australia e` veramente grande vero !?

Dopo quindici minuti in pullman con Ewan allo sterzo siamo arrivati alla scuola dove passeranno la maggior parte del loro soggiorno.

Benvenuti a tutti i Tiranesi, speriamo che la vostra avventura a Perth sia memorabile e favolosa !

The Adventure Never Stops !

Participating in the LawleyItalia Tour gave our students the opportunity to have a wide range of
experiences including seeing some of the world's most ancient and amazing landmarks. It also gave them the chance to meet some wonderful people from all over the world. It was also an opportunity for our
students to fulfil their role as young international ambassadors for their school and their country.
Everywhere we went people would commend the students for their polite and respectful manners and their friendly nature. I am proud to post an email from a couple who experienced our students' open and
kind approach to others and once again commend our tour participants because they made our school
and their parents proud. Thank you Mike and Dale Wyman of Michigan for your message and we
welcome you to the Mount Lawley family. I know one day you will visit Perth and we look forward to
your visit.

Hi Anne

My wife and I had an opportunity to travel to Venice Italy and stayed at the Hotel Belini on April 14, 2010. In the early evening we were enjoying a conversation with friends on the upper floor outside deck. We heard the sounds of young voices coming form the hallway near out table. Two ladies appeared in the doorway, excused themselves and left. I didn't think anything more about it. A few minutes later, one of them returned and gave us a pin with Mount Lawley on it. She went on to explain that the custom of the school is to present the pins to "new friends" that she meets on her trip to Italy. She spent the next 15 or so minutes with us. We recall her name as "Chloe".

As a compliment to her, her parents and your school, she was absolutely delightful. She was polite, articulate and very engaging. The point of this is to compliment you, your school and Chloe individually. She was with a group of students traveling in Italy for six weeks.

You should be very proud of her.

Mike Wyman

Dear Joseph, this is Dale Wyman (Mrs. Mike Wyman) here. I know, unusual name for a female; I was named after Dale Evans (of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans westerns). Anyway, Mike and I are so tickled to hear from all of you at Mt. Lawley! Miss Cloi is such a fabulous ambassador, not only for her school, but for her country, and we are not surprised to hear that Cloi received the Saint award right off the bat. Mike and I enjoyed the photos on your blog. Grazie! Si, si, si, please include our message and photo in your blog. Mike describes the photo as "Two Old People Enjoying Venice". Such a funny guy!

Arts Festival - Asian Language Hub In Action

Mount Lawley's annual Arts Festival held on Friday 30th April was once again a resounding success ! Congratulations to Dr Irving, the Arts staff in particular and the staff and students at our school for making it such a special event. I was thrilled with the sights, sounds, music, art and cultural activity that filled the spaces around our campus. Congratulations, or should I say gong, xi to the Chinese teachers that made room 10.5 such a vibrant and colourful place to be, not just for our students but also our Asian Hub partner students from Inglewood Primary School. They were treated to an assortment of activities including Chinese Calligraphy and Origami. Xie xie to all those that assisted in making this event such a fun and enjoyable addition to our school calendar. We all look forward to the next Arts Festival Day which will be even bigger and brighter !

Gong xi Dr Irving, your seed of an idea has germinated into a funtastic Lawley tradition,

Our final dinner. We dressed up and had presentations at our Trattoria - Marco Polo.

This marvellous man told us that it is his dream to come to Australia. The whole team at marco Polo looked after us so well, grazie mille, siete stati bravissimi !

And so ends our Magical Mystery Tour. Or so we thought. It's Sunday night and we should be on our way home to our loved ones. Instead I'm at Planet Internet in Venice and we have extra days here because life is unpredictable. We want all our families to know we love them and miss them and thank them for their support. Thank goodness for Skype and modern technology. We will continue to think positive and hopefully we will all be together hugging and kissing you as soon as we can.

Venezia - The Miracle City

What a way to end this magical mystery tour, in the City of Miracles !
We have a gorgeous hotel right near la Stazione and il Canale Grande. We start our stay here with a wonderful cena in the Marco Polo Trattoria. "Quanti ?" they ask as Bianca and I walk in. "Diciannove" we reply in unison and they almost fall off their chairs. They give us a back room all to ourselves and the lawleyitalia 2010 family settles in for a wonderful cena insieme. It's good to have the family together again.

"Tutto fa brodo" is one of the themes of this tour. We try to teach everything, from tips on washing clothes on the cheap to how to deal with street sellers to how to get a great photograph. What a learning experience !

Quindi anche questa parte del nostro viaggio finisce con un saluto e delle lacrime alla stazione di Tirano.

After a long train ride we arrive at the beautiful stazione centrale di Milano. We hop on the subway

(la metropolitana), take a ride on a coach from the hotel and arrive at Ripamonti, hotel and residence that caters to 1200 guests. Welcome to Milano, everything is done on a grand scale. We scurry into the centro and see the Duomo (bellissimo !), la Galleria, la Scala, Da Vinci's statue and the biggest music store I've ever seen, Ricordi Dischi. Un gelato e una pizza dopo we head back to our hotel to prepare ourselves for the final leg of our journey, Venezia !

St Moritz e L'Ultimo Giorno A Tirano

Oggi abbiamo preso il trenino rosso (Unesco Heritage Listed) e abbiamo fatto un viaggio a 2253m per andare a St Moritz, scoprendo un paesaggio bellissimo. Siamo andati con Cettina, Doris e la nostra guida Cristina.

Ovviamente ci mancano i nostri a Perth e mandiamo tutti loro un saluto, da parte mia saluto mia moglie e i nostri figli. A big hello to all our families back in Perth, we hope you are enjoying seeing our adventures and we look forward to seeing you again soon and hugging you and telling you face to face about all the wonderful things we've seen and experienced.

Ovviamente dove c'è neve ci sono battaglie diu neve e a St Moritz è andato cosi'.

It all starts as a bit of fun, a snowball here an ice rock there and then it's on for young and old ! The young were right into it (Isabella, Ruby, etc.) and the old were not far behind (Mr Millimaci) or as he's known in the snowfields, The Snow Meister ! It took two adversaries to land a snowball on the mesiter's noggin' (thanks Belinda and Brittany !)

Brodie's thinking, "Should I buy eat that other bar of Swiss chocolate now or save it for the train ride home ?"

Notice the snowball in Brodie's hands and her cheeky smile ? She was waiting for just the right moment to plant it on the head of some poor unsuspecting Italian teacher from Perth that was originally from Sicily once he turned around. Luckily that poor unsuspecting Italian teacher from Perth that was originally from Sicily has eyes in the back of his beanie (that Mr Spice has had his eye on since the San Lorenzo markets in Firenze I might add) and was too quick for the young inexperienced snowster !

I'm not sure but I think Myles loves it here in Italy, what do you think ? Ahh come è bella l'Italia !

Abbiamo fatto una passeggiata in campagna con il nostro cicerone (guida) Ruggero che e' veramente bravissimo a spiegare tante cose interessanti, grazie Signor Professore ! Anche Daniela e Domenica sono venute, molto brave anche loro a camminare in montagna. I ragazzi non erano abituati ma si sono divertiti molto. Abbiamo mangiato i Sciat e i Pizzoccheri, buonissimi ! Alla fine una partitina di calcio, risultato finale Australia 2 - Italia 2.

Bormio Baths

People have been visiting the Bormio Thermal Baths since Roman times. The water is pushed up from deep within the earth and is naturally warm, a delight for our tired bones after so much walking during this amazing adventure !

After our swim we had a pleasant walk to the Bormio Hospitality School where the students prepared and served a delicious meal. We also met Alessia, the teacher who initially got the ball rolling for our exchange program with L'Istituto Pinchetti.

Complimenti ai professori e tutti gli studenti della scuola alberghiera, siete stati veramente eccezionali !

Il Lago Di Como

Tuesday 6th April we went on a discovery tour of Tirano that included the Palazzo Salis, a major historical museum which gave our students an idea of how powerful families lived in this important geographical area in the 16th Century. We were taken to the Municipio where we met the Mayor and received our gifts from the city.

The train ride from Firenze to Tirano was an excellent opportunity for Caio and Myles to help Signor Spice brush up on his Italia. Buon lavoro ragazzi and well done Mr Spice, you were an excellent role model for our young language learners !

Siamo arrivati a Tirano il sabato prima di Pasqua e le nostre famiglie ci hanno accolto con una gentilezza e ospitalita' veramente apprezzata. Siamo andati insieme prima a scuola e poi ognuno ha portato via il loro fratello o la loro sorella di scambio a casa per un po' di riposo. Il giorno dopo, la domenica di Pasqua (la prima Pasqua italiana per i nostri studenti) e' stata piena di cioccolati, uova e la bellissima neve nelle montagne di Tirano. Che meraviglia e che piacere !

Da Napoli siamo andati a Firenze, un viaggio di circa tre ore in treno. Arrivati alla stazione abbiamo camminato all'albergo, il bellissimo Hotel Donatello in Piazza Dell'Indipendenza. A Firenze siamo saliti sulla Cupola Di Brunelleschi, abbiamo mangiato i waffle in Via dei Calzolai, abbiamo comprato delle cose stupende nel mercato di San Lorenzo e abbiamo visitato la Galleria Dell'Accademia (per vedere il David di Michelangelo) e abbiamo fatto la fila per visitare Gli Uffizi dove abbiamo visto i lavori di Botticelli, Da Vinci, Michelangelo e Raffaele, come dice Belinda i TMNT ! Firenze e' una citta' elegante e stupenda !

Un supersalto alla citta' del palio e ci trovammo nella Piazza Del Campo a Siena. Una corsa per prendere il treno fa anche bene alla salute !

Non Solo Napoli

Da Roma abbiamo preso il treno per andare a Napoli, una citta' piena d'energia e belle cose, specialmente il cibo! Our visit to Naples,the home of Pizza, Sfogliatelle e Pulcinella was exciting but we saw so much more including Pompei, the Amalfi Coast with the magnificent cities of Positano and Sorrento. The Neapolitans have a sunny disposition and we had a wonderful time catching up with Libera, our exchange student from Benevento. O Sole Mio....

Our 2009 exchange student Libera gives us a warm welcome with her French exchange student, Fiona. It's great to see intercultural friendships continue overseas.

Pompei was a magical place. It was like walking around in a living museum frozen in time.

Our visits to il supermercato are an important part of the trip. What a wonderful world of food we get to explore ! Salvatore let our group try a variety of Neapolitan food including a delicious dessert. Ma oggi ci vuole un superpanino !

And so we say arrivederci to Libera and to Napoli, what an extraordinary experience !

Bella Roma

Our first view of the Colosseo was from the transfer bus from L'Aeroporto Leonardo Da Vinci to our albergo. We were soooo excited, imagine seeing such an iconic monument and landmark on our very first day in Italia ! We weren't to know it yet but this was the start of a wonderful adventure, una bellissima avventura that would see us cram so much into each day. How lucky were we !?

These guys play soccer (scusate, il calcio) on a field with il Colosseo as a backdrop. Unbelievable !

Time to unload il pullman and move into our first albergo. It was exciting; traffic, sirens, action !

Here we go !

Home for the next three days ! Hotel Madison, via Marsala right across the road from Roma Termini Train station. Plenty of shops (negozi) and places to eat (ristoranti).

Nothing like a plane trip (un viaggio in aereo) to boost your appetite ! Our first taste of Italy, una pasticceria on the way to the centro della citta`. Buon appetito ragazze !

Che bellissima fontana ! Talk about making the most of an opportunity. After an 18 hour flight did we rest and relax ? No, we walked into the city to explore and discover ! The only way to travel. This is where we discovered that the flags that Sondra Tate made us would be an invaluable tool to keep us all together and on track. I also learned to stop traffic in Rome at this fountain, if you just wait, you'll be waiting a loooong time, so when walking in Rome bisogna essere coraggiosi, put the hand out and

make a move !

Ecco Il Vittoriano, Italy's tribute to the unknown soldier. Enorme vero ? An incredible landmark.

Pizza pizza everywhere. Our first pizza in Italia was at Michael's Pizzeria,

very close to a very famous fountain.

Then finally, there it was; one of the most famous fountains al mondo.

La Fontana di Trevi. People EVERYWHERE ! It's sort of like the crowds at the Royal Show.

This is an iconic location and draws people from all over the world. To ensure you come back to Rome you must toss a coin in the fountain, "Three coins in the fountain..."

Mission accomplished, adesso si mangia !

Allora, pizza, pasta and now it's time for our first....GELATO !!!!!

This is the first post for the inaugural Mount Lawley Senior High School Giro D'Italia (Tour of Italy). Prima di cominciare (before I begin) vorrei (I would like) to acknowledge the incredible efforts of Bianca Petale, my colleague who has been instrumental in planning and preparing the montagna (mountain) of paperwork required to make a viaggio (trip) such as this happen. Grazie Bianca!

Poi (then) I would like to acknowledge and thank Connie White, our enthusiastic and efficient Travel Agent for her pazienza (patience) and willingness to assist and guide us. Connie gave up much personal time to attend meetings and prepare and package the tour for us. Grazie Connie!

Adesso (now) vorrei ringraziare (to thank) i genitori (the parents) for their support and encouragement with the planning and preparation for the tour. Grazie genitori!

It's also important to me to ringraziare all the support, administrative and executive staff that have aiutato (helped) our team get us to the point dove (where) we are quasi pronti (almost ready) to say arrivederci Perth and head on our Italian adventure, quindi (therefore) grazie mille!

E` anche molto importante ringraziare Antonella Capatti la nostra collega in Italia who has worked with us to prepare the Italian leg of our sister school relationship and infatti il Preside e tutti quelli all'Istituto Di Istruzione Superiore Balilla Pinchetti that have helped realise this project, grazie colleghi italiani!
